SabahSabah is one of those places in Asia that can get away with boasting of eco-treasures from mountain high to ocean deep. It is home to Southeast Asia's highest and most accessible mountain — Mt Kinabalu — as well as some of Asia's finest diving, with signature destinations like Sipadan, Layang Layang and Mabul, but also relatively undiscovered gems such as Kapalai, Lankayan, and Mataking. Closer to ground level, Sabah offers eco-adventures such as the orang utan rehabilitation centre at Sepilok, whitewater rafting, and river cruises to spot the unique flora and fauna of the state.

Getting there

Malaysia Airlines provides direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Hong Kong to Kota Kinabalu, with intra-state connections to Tawau. Singapore Airlines and Silk Air run codeshare flights with Malaysia Airlines between Singapore and Kota Kinabalu. Air Asia serves Kota Kinabalu and Tawau from various points of origin.

Dive season

Tropical climate, with diving possible throughout the year. In general, better diving conditions are from April to October. However, optimal seasons differ, so it's best to check with relevant dive operators. Water temperatures are generally warm, and for most diving, a 3mm suit or equivalent should be sufficient.

Document and taxes

In most cases, visas are not required for stays of up to 30 days for most countries. If in doubt, please check with local Malaysian consular office. Passports should be valid for a minimum of one year after entry. Departure tax for all international flights is RM40 per passenger, and is generally included in the ticket price.

Communications

On the mainland, domestic GSM network and international roaming is available. On the various islands, satellite-based phones may be an option by the resorts. Local access numbers for internet/email roaming are available via the iPass network.
